Our favorites for 2022

Last year we offered you our bucket list of things to do before school starts. We’ve updated that for 2022. Some of our favorites have stayed and we’ve updated others. Read along with us and see how we complete the list. We offer:


50 Things to do Before Fall


  1. Have a picnic at the Arboretum.
  2. Watch a movie at Union Market.
  3. Check out the playground at the Fields at RFK.
  4. Spend a rainy afternoon playing inside at the Lane.
  5. Plant flowers in a container garden.
  6. Binge on candy at the Capital Candy Jar.
  7. Check out the wild ponies at Assateague.
  8. Go for a bike ride on Kingman Island.
  9. Learn to skateboard at the Maloof Skate Park.
  10. Pick lavender.
  11. Work on the kids’ summer reading list by picking up a book at one of DC’s public libraries
  12. While you are at the library, drop off your Discover Summer gameboard.
  13. Go to Lincoln Park and read your library book.
  14. Head over to the National Geographic Museum and learn all about King Tut in the limited time virtual exhibit
  15. Eat a half-smoke at Ben’s Chili Bowl.
  16. Cheer on the Nationals in person – if its your first time, don’t forget to pick up your certificate at guest services.
  17. Enjoy a movie at one of our favorite theaters in DC. 
  18. Buy flowers and picnic ingredients at the H Street farmers market.
  19. Go to the Postal Museum.
  20. Spend a day at Adventure Park USA and finally ride a roller coaster.
  21. Take a quiet stroll through the gardens at the Franciscan Monastery.
  22. Do some summer cleaning. We have tips for trash or treasure.
  23. Make s’mores in the backyard firepit. 
  24. Shoot some kid-sized hoops at Maury playground.
  25. Make some art and leave it in the Free Little Art Gallery. If you are not the artsy type, you can pick up a piece that someone else created.
  26. Buy the freshest of fish at the Fish Market.
  27. Play a round of miniature golf. Kids are welcome at H-street Country Club before 7 PM if accompanied by an adult.
  28. Learn to sew.
  29. Have an old fashioned family game night
  30. Tour the Basilica.
  31. Take a water taxi tour of the monuments.
  32. Take the streetcar to get a different view of H-Street.
  33. Jump in the fountains at the Eastern Market splash pad.
  34. Climb and slide at Ludlow Taylor playground.
  35. Sail on a pirate cruise.
  36. Visit the pandas at the National Zoo
  37. Make glow stick fairy jars and make your backyard magical. 
  38. Check out the tiny art at the Free Little Art Gallery.
  39. Discover the bast place to get donuts (we’re still taking suggestions on this one).
  40. Make a sidewalk chalk mosaic.
  41. Grab some bagels and have a breakfast picnic at Lovejoy Park.
  42. Head back to the arboretum and check out the bonsai trees.
  43. Take a picture at the Heart Wall at Union Market.
  44. Climb the steps at the Lincoln Memorial. You will get a great view of the city and you can convince the kids that you can see your house.
  45. Grab breakfast at Jimmy T’s and then enjoy a walk around the neighborhood.
  46. Watch a movie at the National Building Museum.
  47. Cool off at one of DC’s free splash pads or pools
  48. Take a hike at the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. Help us keep tabs on the beavers while you are there.
  49. Explore a playground that features the monuments, only in kid size. 
  50. Donate food through the Blessing Box at St. Joseph’s church.
