Discover Summer

DC Public Library’s Summer Reading and Learning Program

By Anita May 26, 2022

Discover Summer is a program hosted by DC Public Libraries that helps DC residents to participate in activities and events, read, and explore your neighborhood. Your local library has everything that you need to get started.

This program kicks off on June 1 and goes through the end of August. However, if you pre-register by the end of the day today, you will be entered into a drawing for free tickets to Awesome Con (DC’s Comic Con).

Awesome Con tickets are just one of the great prizes that you can win. Throughout the summer, you can also be entered in drawing to win other amazing prizes such as gift cards to movies, bookstores, and restaurants, Nationals tickets and more.

You can get started by registering through the library website.  After you register, download the app and complete four activities each month to be eligible for the drawings. Once you complete those four items, take your paper gameboard to the library or have them marked off in the app to be entered for the drawings. There are categories for various age groups from birth through adult.

Each age group has their own prizes. For kids ages 6-12, they can win a 3D Animal kit, a tiny planetarium, Nationals tickets, a coloring poster of DC or a free book. Kids can become a super reader by reading for 20 minutes a day and can be entered to win a Smithsonian Building Block Set. The super reader gameboards are available at the library.

One of the things that our family is most excited about is the Library Days at DC Museums. All you need to do is show your library card and you get free admission to the Spy Museum on July 18, the Kreeger Museum on July 23, and the Phillips Collection on August 13.

This summer, you might run into us at the Northeast Library, where the kid will be working on her Discover Summer activities.
