This past weekend my parents took me to Beyond King Tut: The Immersive Experience at The National Geographic Museum in Washington, DC. Beyond King Tut is a walk-through virtual reality experience that tells us about the life and death of King Tut.

King Tut was just 9 years old - the same age as me! - when he became King of Egypt in 1332 B.C. Kids of all ages will like this exhibit. I loved all of the tiny movies about King Tut scattered throughout the exhibit. Some of the rooms showed reproductions of the amazing treasures in King Tut's tomb.

My favorite parts of the exhibit were:

  • A big room that showed a movie on all the walls and on the floor. You could stay in that room as long as you wanted to watch the movie.
  • A room with a scroll that explained how King Tut’s body was prepared after he died.
  • The movie in the auditorium (in the building across the walk from the King Tut exhibit).

Kids should go see Beyond King Tut because it makes learning history fun!

Things to know:

  • Plan for 1-2 hours to go through the exhibit and watch the movie.
  • The exhibit is very dark but it is not scary.
  • There were a lot of good places to take pictures, like in the big room with the movie on the walls and the oversized National Geographic frame.
  • Listen for an announcement about watching a movie. (There are some gross parts in the movie when the dead pharaoh’s body is discussed in a lot of detail.)
  • Don't lose your tickets - when you go back to the main exhibit, you will need to show your tickets again.
