A Celebration of Women's History Month

In Honor of Women Worldwide

By Denise Drake March 13, 2024

In honor of Women’s Month I wanted to pay homage to all of us - the true Queens that we are. To all of the moms that became mothers before me, that I looked at with judgment and shame. The moms at airports that I prayed would not be bringing their kids on the same flight as me. the moms I passed on the street with screaming children and thought, “my mother would have never let me behave like that”. To all off you, I AM SORRY!!!! Life humbled me, and boy did it humble the loving soul out of me. I type this, hiding in the closet, eating last year’s Halloween candy that I told my toddler was cabbage and wouldn’t taste very good. Why am I hiding from an innocent toddler, you ask? Because my child keeps choosing violence, I didn’t even know I could ruin her life, (mind you, she’s been on this earth for less time than Biden has been in office) by giving her the wrong water bottle! Because this makes sense! I love her spirit, and some days it is PAINFUL when that fire is directed at me, until I remember the women that came before her, who had their voices silenced. Whose strength and courage wasn’t seen for the gift that it was but something to be changed within them.

I admire my daughter’s courage, her conviction in her no. She will look me right in my eyes while only wearing her underwear and rain boots (on the wrong feet) and tell me NO, and proceed to look at me like, what was the thought process behind that question, and why would you ask me that! It’s in moments like this when I pray nobody ever changes that about her. For every female everywhere that can’t stand in their truth, it makes me proud that I get to witness one that can scream hers. I know, as a mom, it’s the hardest thing to want to draw a line and also want to cultivate that fierceness. Most times I hear people ask, “you just going to let her do that,”and I most likely, I am, because sometimes celebrating ourselves changes the trajectory of a life in a positive way more than shame ever could. So if you have a daughter, sister, friend, girlfriend, mother, grandmother like mine, celebrate their boldness while you celebrate yourself. We are the reason our ancestors, the women that paved the way, are having brunch in the afterlife, toasting to whom we are now. Happy Women’s Month to everyone that embraces being female!
