Beat the heat without spending a dime

Free places to hang out inside

By Anita July 14, 2022

We are so fortunate to live in a city that has so many free things to offer. Here are the highlights of the indoor activities so that you can cool off.

The National Postal Museum is one of our favorite spots. You don’t hear as much about it as you do about some of the more famous museums. No one has made a movie about this one but it would be a good setting for one. On the hot or rainy day, it will give you hours of free air-conditioned entertainment.

Our DC libraries has so much to offer. Just sitting in one of the cozy spots offered to read a book is a great way to beat the heat. However, our libraries have so much more to offer. Our calendar includes the highlights of the cool and free things to do both in person and virtually at your local library.

Once you have your library card, you can participate in library days at local museums. One day in the months of June, July, and August, your library card will gain you free admission to a museum that typically charges a fee. It is a great way to experience a new museum and you won’t have to spend a cent.

We have a lot of fun outdoor pools and spray parks. We also have a great collection of indoor pools that come free of charge to DC residents. There is at least one in every ward and they are open all year round. Some are undergoing repairs so be sure to check the status before heading out.

We hope you enjoy the summer and find fun ways to beat the DC heat.
