Almost a quarter of school age girls don’t have the access to feminine hygiene products and 4 out of 5 teens say that they have missed at least some school time because they didn’t have the supplies that they needed during menstruation according to NPR.
Some teachers at Brookland Middle School are organizing to make having the supplies they need a reality for every girl in the school. In addition, they are striving to ensure that every student has deodorant. A very generous donor gave supplies to the school at the beginning of the year. Sadly, those supplies have run out. In January, City Council passed a law mandating that every middle and high school in the District to have free products available for their female students. At this time, schools have not received funding to make that mandate a reality.
Our community can help fill the gap until those funds are available. Next time you go shopping, just pick up a few extra sticks of deodorant or period supplies. Open feminine supplies will also be accepted. Take those to the school at 1150 Michigan Ave, NE and the teachers will make them available to the 6th-8th grade kids that need them.
If you have supplies that you would like to donate but can’t get them to the school, contact us at mackiddceast@macaronikid.com and we will make sure that get to the school.
