Cherry Blossoms Everywhere

Places to check out the trees without going to the tidal basin.

By Anita March 24, 2022

Everyone should go to the tidal basin once and see the beauty of the cherry blossoms at peak. There are usually big crowds though and that makes it hard to get photos. It can also be a little scary when you have kids in tow with all those people. Luckily, our neighborhood has plenty of places to check out those pink treasures without the crowds. Some of them may be on your own street. Others will be in the National Parks that we can enjoy close to home. Here are a few of our favorites:

The National Arboretum – We told you about our trip to the Arboretum in July. It was a great place to visit in the summer but there are thousands of cherry trees in the park along with spring flowers such as mom’s favorite daffodils making it one of the best places to visit in the spring.

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens – We told you about this park just a few weeks ago. We had so much fun in late winter. This place comes alive in the spring. Lilies are starting to bloom. The frogs return. And the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Just be careful to stay away from the wild turkey. He is aggressive so you should let him have his way on the paths.

Lincoln Park – This feels like a neighborhood park. You will see families picnicking, joggers running around the perimeter, kids playing in the two playgrounds, and cherry blossoms. This is a national park though and is managed by the National Park Service. Our family loves to walk there to enjoy the flowering trees on our walk and then spend some time photographing the blooms.

Stanton Park – This is another national park in our neighborhood. This was the scene of our first family photos featuring the cherry blossoms. It is another park where you will see neighborhood families enjoying the spring.

Aletha Tanner Park – We are not sure if they have cherry blossoms at the park but they do have the NoMa in Bloom festival. Head over to the park on Saturday and try your hand at flying a kite, playing lawn games, or enjoying other festival activities.
