There is a good chance that you have already heard of Casey Trees. They are a non-profit that is charged with protecting the tree canopy of our city. Beginning in 2002, Casey Trees has been working to preserve our trees, plant new ones, and educate our citizens. Over the summer they planted a new tree right in front of the Mac Family home. It was very exciting for us as we dreamed of hanging a bird feeder in the summer and decorating it with lights in the fall. The really nice gentleman from Casey Trees provided Mom with lots of information about the tree including a lot of information about the black tupelo’s leaves and projected growth.
The interactive DC Fall Foliage Map is amazing. There are two ways to search. If there is a particular tree that you like, you can search the city for that tree. It will even tell you which ones are “fall showstoppers.” Our black tupelo also know as a blackgum also falls into that category. It would be a fun activity to choose a particular tree and then go for a walk and see how many you can find using the map as a guide. You can also enter your address or any address in DC and see what types of trees are near that address.
Their website will also tell you about city rebate programs available to plant certain types of trees. We hope you will be able to take a minute or two this weekend and enjoy the fall trees here at home.
