Mac Mom loves books. You will find many bookshelves overflowing in our house all filled with books purchased by mom. Mac Kid and dad are not as excited about books. It takes a special bookstore to get them engaged. Politics and Prose at Union Market does just that. It is a very small store so it is not overwhelming. It does have a great kids’ section. There are not tons of books but we were able to find just what we needed.
The most exciting thing was that there was a small section devoted to cooking with young chefs. The cookbooks in that section were amazing. Mom is always looking for cookbooks to share with the kid but this store made it super easy to find the right books for both of them. They also had kid’s cookbooks that were new to mom. This is definitely worth the return visit. When the weather starts getting cooler and we don’t want to spend as much time outside, cooking is our go to activity and this will give us lots to work from.
The store also had a great (but small) assortment of back-to-school items. There were erasers in the shape of drink containers and macaroons. They also had very nice blank notebooks that would be perfect for taking notes.
A word of caution. Beyond the kids’ section, there was a wall of items like kitchen towels and pot holders. They contained adult phrases and naughty words. They were not appropriate for little eyes but they are easy to avoid.
The store, located at 1250 5th Street NE is open Tuesday – Saturday 10-8 and Sunday 11-7. If you are a member, from Septebmer 10-12, you can get 20% off almost everything in the store. Membership details are available on their website.
