There is a Rooster on the Roof!

H Street Farm above WS Jenks and Son

By Anita July 22, 2021

We drive past WS Jenks and Son hardware store all the time. Not once did we suspect that it housed roosters and chickens. It does and it has much much more. The H Street Farm went to Mac Kids school when she was in PK-3 so we knew it was there. We did not know how very cool it is and how much we would love it.

Walking into WS Jenks in itself is very cool. There are beautiful wooden stairs and a tile depiction of the store that we did not expect to find on there. The store was chalk full of a little bit of everything and everything that we both wanted and needed. They had the outdoor yard lights that we have been looking for. They had blow up pools perfect for a Capitol Hill backyard. They had canning supplies which will be needed next month. They had the perfect paint for our backdoor. And they had a couple of cool rooftop surprises.

We followed the green steps up to the rooftop farm. It was so cool. They had everything that you could want to start your very own container or raised garden. There were strawberry plants in very cool vertical planters. There were tropical plans that Mac Kid has been craving for her room. There were all kids of herbs that Mac Mom would like to have in her little herb garden. There were tomato plans with tomatoes already starting to grow. There were so many kinds of flowering plants including miniature sunflowers like the ones that Mac Kid attempted to grow in her garden cart.

There were also two big surprises. The first was that there was a pen with chickens and roosters on the roof. We had no idea that there would be chickens when we set out on our adventure. These birds were beautiful. If chicken shows are a thing, these fellows would win for sure.

The next was our purchase and something that Mac Mom has wanted most of her life. They had a whole little section of Venus flytrap plants. They were a mix of cute and creepy. Mom told kid that she could only have one if she did research on how to care for them. The Kid was up early the next day searching as much as she could on how to care for them. After carefully examination of the many plants available, she chose the perfect one.

The hours vary for the rooftop farm. They are not the same as the hardware store below. Make sure that you check the website ahead of time to see when they are open.  They also have interesting classes. If last weeks story on bonsai trees inspired you, they have a class for that on August 22.

We hope that you will check out this rooftop surprise right on Bladensburg Road.
