One of our favorite ways to start the weekend is by waking up to the H Street Farm Fresh Market. We love to fill our basket (another Mac Grandma gift) and plan super fresh and healthy meals. This market doesn’t have tons of vendors but it has a great variety. We have gotten to know some of them and we always leave with a full basket and lots of meal ideas.
The market takes place every Saturday from 9:00-12:30 and is located at 800 13th Street NE. It is right by a streetcar stop so it would make a fun streetcar ride if you don’t live as close to the market as we do. You can check out their website to see what is fresh and to grab some recipes to make with your fresh produce. Their site will even tell you how far each vendor travels to get to DC. We have not tried every single one but would like to share some of our favorites.
First up is Number 1 Sons or as we call him, the pickle guy. These are some of the best pickles that we have ever enjoyed. Our favorite is the half sour.
For cheese Caputo Brothers Creamery is the way to go. The fresh mozzarella is delicious on sandwiches or pizza. It can be really hard to find a good ricotta cheese and the Caputo Brothers don’t disappoint.
Atwaters has amazing baked goods. Among our favorite is the lemon pound cake bites.
Quaker Valley Orchard provides us with in-season fruits. This year so far, we have feasted on apples, strawberries, and cherries. All of our buys have been top notch. No old berries hidden on the bottom for these guys.
Richfield Farm always brings us joy. We bought both orange and purple cauliflower here. Such a fun way to get kids to eat their veggies. The tomatoes were so red that we couldn’t pass them up. Our favorite weekly treat is to get flowers. They grace our table for days. We have not purchased the same variety twice and have always walked away from them with a smile.
Other vendors that we have not tried include meats, coffee, and alcohol. Some of those are sure to make it into our basket in the near future. All produce must be grown within 200 miles of Washington, DC. No resale or third parties are permitted to sell at the market.
This may be a small market but it is truly a treasure in our community. Not often do you have the opportunity to eat produce that is so close to the city and have a chance to meet those that produce it. If you haven’t spent some time at the H-Street Farm Fresh Market, you should give it a try. It will be there until December 18 and it will make your weekend and your tastebuds happier.
