A Firecracker of a Snack

Places to grab snacks for the fireworks

By Anita June 30, 2021

We love watching the fireworks but there is a lot of waiting and not many snack options so having a well packed bag of snacks is a must. We have searched our local neighborhood for some of our favorites to share with you. Just make sure that you grab them the day before or check ahead of time and make sure that they are open.

Fare Well – If you have kids with allergies, this is the place for you. No place else can you find two-time Food Network Cupcake War champions that can also make sure that the treats are safe for the whole family. The bakery case will make your mouth water with all their scrumptious goodies carefully prepared by the crew that also owns Sticky Fingers. We were treated to a couple of cookies, and they were some of the best cookies. We took one bite and Mac Kid and I both exclaimed these are good.

H Street Farmers Market – Independence Day is on a Sunday this year making the Farmers Market a perfect choice. Run up on Saturday from 9-12:30 and grab fruit or snacks. You will be able to find fruits that are in season and grown within 200 miles of our community. It looks like peaches and cherries should be available. There is also a limited amount of baked goods that can be purchased. Our favorite is the mini lemon pound cake bites. We never leave the market without them.

Union Kitchen – This store focuses on the Made in DC products. You will find snacks made right here in our city along side of the big brands. This is a good option if you want something other than sweets. We tried some amazing kale chips and the individual antipasto trays looked so tempting. They also had old fashioned animal crackers that elicited a nostalgic feeling.

The Capital Candy Jar – This is a tiny shop with lots of pizzazz. Their candy is made by had in small batches. They started off by making lollipops and they are a must try. The Swedish fish were another big hit in our house. They were soft and chewy as they were meant to be. We also noshed on a few bags of chocolates, truffles, and popcorn. All were well enjoyed. One really fun thing that this store offers is soda from all over the country. Each state is represented so find your home state favorite and enjoy!

A Litteri – Established in 1926, this is the oldest vendors on our list. Step inside and browse around and you will find out why it has sustained. This is one of our favorite shops in all of DC. It would be easy to go on and on about all the special things that you can get in the store like fresh ricotta, pizza dough, and pasta but today the focus is on snacks. If you consider a sub a snack, this is the place to be. We have been ordering subs from there for over 20 years and our last one was just as good as the first. They also have an assortment of Italian cookies and candies that don’t cry America but celebrate our melting pot.

The Creamery at Union Market – Our final place to grab your firework snacks is a creamery but it provides more than just ice cream and dairy products. Although we did try the ice cream, we will save that creamy goodness for another day. Today our focus is on the cookies. The snickerdoodles were just the right texture. They were not crumbly but not so soft that they didn’t hold their shape. It is hard to find the perfect snickerdoodle, but we found it here. The chocolate chip cookies rival the snickerdoodles. Just the right amount of chips and not too sweet.
