Choose your own Chocolate Bar

Edible activity for your kids

By Anita June 24, 2021

It was only day one of school summer break and we started hearing “I don’t have anything to do.” A list was made of things that you can do while the parents work. She chose the make your own chocolate bar. This can be an independent activity or one that needs parental support depending on the age of the child. We took the chocolate out of the microwave but otherwise, it was an independent activity for our 8-year-old.

Step one was to gather the ingredients. We had chocolate wafers on hand but chocolate chips would work just as well. We used both milk and white chocolate.  We then gave her a list of add-ins for the bars. Our list included the below but you could use anything that goes with chocolate.

•Peanuts

•Walnuts

•Coconut

•Cherries

•Sprinkles

•Oatmeal

•Rice Crispies

•Marshmallows

•Raisins

•Mint

She chose coconut, sprinkles, and marshmallows.  We had a silicone bar mold. If that is not available, any kind of a mold including a silicone ice cube tray will work. It is also possible to start by just spreading a rectangle of chocolate right onto a wax paper or parchment paper lined baking sheet. Each type of chocolate was put in the microwave for one minute in a microwave safe bowl. After it is melted, stir well so that the chocolate is smooth and spreads easily. The bowl will be hot so you might need an adult for this.

Spread chocolate into the mold or on the paper. Our 8-year-old did this independently but the younger kids will need a hand.  Then layer with your add-ins. Let it cool until the chocolate is solid. If you just can’t wait, stick it in the fridge or freezer to speed up the process.

That’s it! It is a simple activities but we really enjoyed it and our Mac Kid was very proud of her creation.
